This past Saturday was the fifth annual Zombie Walk and it was indeed a sight to see. Over 2,000 people, well perhaps corpses is a more apt description, walked, shuffled, and dragged their way through over a mile of road throughout downtown Phoenix.
And while the sheer number of people was surprising, the truly impressive spectacle was the creativity of the costumes. Zombie classic, Resident Evils Nemesis, Lego Zombie, Stormtrooper zombie, zombie Santa and a matching Mrs. Claus, to even a zombie Teletubby, (which was probably the most terrifying costume of the entire night) were just a few of the stand out costumes. The zombies were not the only ones that were creative however. The police and quarantine units had their own special characters from Rick and Michonne of AMC's “The Walking Dead”, to Hunk from Resident Evil all appeared in an attempt to stem the horde.
At one point near the end of the walk it honestly felt a little bit like a real Zombie experience, or as best as we could hope, as the crowd accidentally split off into different directions of the predetermined path. Looking down from a staircase to see cops and zombie defense units running about, shouting throughout the plaza as the dead shambled towards them is going to be the closest I get to a true zombie apocalypse for at least 10 years I'd say. You never know what may happen.
The walk concluded with everyone regrouping at the Heritage and Science Park where food, vendors and make up artist were stationed about for more fun. And while most people enjoyed the festivities, such as the Powerman 5000 performance closing out the night, some chose to remain in character longer. I saw a man crouched in the corner eating a nice disembodied head and snarling at passers by.
After the amazing turnout this year, it is sure to be an impressive Zombie Walk 6 in 2014.
