WILD HORSE PASS MOTORSPORTS PARK GEARED UP FOR
RETURN OF NHRA MELLO YELLO DRAG RACING SERIES
The 30th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals kicks off Feb. 21-23, the second of 24-races in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, and the newly renovated Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park is ready to ‘Go on Yello’ with numerous track improvements and exhilarating activities for everyone. And with a ticket special that offers free admission for children 12 and under when accompanied by a paying adult, there will be plenty of family fun for all ages.
Fans and drivers alike are excited about returning to the multi-faceted, 450-acre facility located outside of Phoenix. Highlights of the renovated Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park include new racing surface, new CompuLink timing, public-address systems and new scoreboards.
“We’re doing everything we can to make the customers happy,” said Paul Clayton, managing partner for Copper Train, the management company hired by the land owners, the Gila River Indian Community. “We’re trying to make this a special event. I want the first-time fan experience to be incredible.”
Veteran drag racer and former NHRA Division 5 dragstrip operator/owner Bill Schneider is in charge of the dragstrip operation as dragstrip events manager, and is eager to showcase the new facility to racers and fans when the NHRA arrives.
“From an old drag racer’s standpoint, it makes me want to bend over and kiss it,” said Schneider, who has been involved in the sport since 1956. “It is absolutely beautiful. I’m pleased and impressed with how quickly and well things have fallen into place.”
NHRA Mello Yello drivers will have their eyes set on winning at the annual “duel in the desert” for bragging rights while others hope to just get their mojo flowing again following the winter break. All in all, fans will be guaranteed a new track surface made for memorable and intense side-by-side racing. Defending winners of the event that will be televised on ESPN2 include Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock).
