VICTORIA - Photos of a giant Pacific octopus grabbing a seagull at the Ogden Point breakwater are going viral on the Internet, and the woman who took the images was on the run Tuesday doing media interviews.
Ginger Morneau of Langford was out on the breakwater on March 24 with her husband, Ken, and her brother, Lou Barker, when something at the water's edge caught her eye.
Morneau has fast reactions because she's a stayat-home mom. She's also an amateur photographer and on that day, she had her camera.
"It was a stunning moment, to be sure," Morneau said. "We were strolling along and talking. I saw the bird in the water and it looked like he was pecking at something underwater."
Then she realized the bird had not lifted its head out of the water.
"That was the odd part. That's what made us step forward - and we realized there was an octupus."
The first photo Morneau took shows the seagull's head engulfed in the octopus's mouth. The bird's wings were spread "and it was fighting actively," she said.
"It was apparent that it was going to lose," Morneau said.
She initially wanted to intercede and save the bird because she didn't want to watch it die. But it was impossible to safely get down to the lower level of the breakwater.
