Massive Japanese crash claims eight Ferraris, three Benzes, and a Lamborghini

A single miscalculation from a Ferrari driver earlier today in Japan led to a chain reaction that ultimately wrecked or destroyed 14 vehicles including eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Skyline, and a Prius that was in the right place at the wrong time.

A group of foreign car enthusiasts were heading to Hiroshima from Kyushu when one of the drivers lost control trying to overtake a car on a wet, curved part of China Road in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Ferrari driver reportedly hit the median and created a reaction that caused the other cars in the lineup to crash, according to Japanese media (translated). READ MORE HERE

 

 

Company markets ATM that plays advertisements

A new ATM allows users to avoid pesky transaction fees with one catch: You have to watch an advertisement instead.

Clinton Townsend, a 25-year-old from Brooklyn, is behind the company Free ATMs NYC, and has already installed one machine at a music venue in the city.

The ad plays on a small screen above the machine while the ATM processes the transaction.

"The people want this and the people need this, " Townsend told Business Insider.

The ad doesn't make the process longer and lasts no longer than it takes for the machine to dispense money, according to Townsend. READ MORE HERE

European study says scent can reveal details about personality

This puts a new spin on the old saw about passing the smell test.

According to an upcoming study published in the European Journal of Personality, people can make accurate judgments about another person's personality based on the way he or she smells.

The results of the study were reported by the website MyHealthNewsDaily.

In the study, Polish researches asked raters to sniff white-cotton T-shirts that were worn for three consecutive nights by 100 men and 100 women who had taken personality tests.

The raters were then asked to make judgments about the shirt-wearer's personality based on what they smelled. READ MORE HERE

Birdseed spell backfires on Florida police employees

For two Florida municipal employees, an alleged plan to cast a supernatural spell on their boss was anything but super.

Due to some supposedly mystical birdseed and a janitor who blew the whistle on the seedy hex, one employee has been fired from her post at the North Miami Police Department and a recommendation for termination is pending for the other.

Veteran police officer Elizabeth Torres and office manager Yvonne Rodriguez's curse was to take place in August amid budget cuts and planned layoffs, but they never got past the planning stages.

"We were looking at a reduction in staff of about 9.4 percent, so everybody was on edge," North Miami Police Department Public Information Officer Mark Perkins told msnbc.com. "The two employees were conspiring to place birdseed in the city manager's office to get him to leave, the belief being that if you sprinkle birdseed around it, it will make the person - any person- want to leave." Parents Can Rent Toys At New Website

BOSTON (CBS) – When you are a kid on Christmas morning, it’s all about volume. But when you are a parent, cruising the aisles of the toy-store in December, it’s about trying to balance a happy holiday with a reasonable budget.

Paul Reinsmith of Boston has found a great way to have plenty of toys under the tree, and all year, without breaking the bank.

Paul and his wife Pam discovered what they call the ‘Netflix’ of toys.

First-grader accused of sexual harassment

A Boston elementary school is investigating a 7-year-old first-grader for sexual harassment after he struck another boy his age in the groin.

But the mother of the accused said her son was fending off the other child, who had choked him in an altercation on a school bus on Nov. 22.

“I think my kid was right to fight back,’’ said the mother, Tasha Lynch, 30. “He wasn’t doing anything except protecting himself.’’

Lynch’s son, Mark Curran, who wears his light-brown hair in a Mohawk, said he has been afraid to return to Tynan Elementary School in South Boston since the fight. READ MORE HERE

Newark police officer steals car from drunk driver, smashes into wife's car, authorities say

NEWARK — When a Newark cop allegedly told a drunken driver to get out of his pickup truck and sober up, it probably seemed like he was giving the guy a break.

But shortly after instructing the driver to hoof it and retrieve the pickup later, officer Enrique Gonzalez took the truck to Garfield, where police say he used it to ram his estranged wife’s car.

Gonzalez was off-duty, but in uniform on Nov. 15 when he pulled the driver over near Walnut Street in Newark’s East Ward, Police Director Samuel DeMaio said today.

"He says, ‘Okay, I’m not going to arrest you. Park your car here. I’m going to leave the keys in the tailpipe. Come back and get the car when you’re sober,’" DeMaio said. The driver "comes back several hours later and finds the car gone." READ MORE HERE

 

 

Two would-be carjackers in St. Petersburg foiled by car's stick shift

ST. PETERSBURG — Two would-be carjacking victims still have their car after their assailants were thwarted by an unlikely ally: The car's stick shift.

Police said a 45-year-old man was dropping off a work truck on the 1000 block of 31st Street S just before 1 a.m. His 23-year-old girlfriend came to pick him up in her 2007 Nissan, which has a manual transmission.

She stopped to let her boyfriend get out and lock up at the business' gate. As he returned to the car and the pair got ready to drive away, two men appeared on either side, police said. READ MORE HERE
