Last year, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante launched a video series featuring covers performed in virtual collaboration with other artists amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, he’s collected a selection of those performances for an upcoming album.
The record, titled Silver Linings, is due out May 14. It features covers of artists such as Iron Maiden, KISS, U2, Fleetwood Mac and Billie Eilish played by Benante and his friends, including members of Volbeat, Suicidal Tendencies, Living Colour and Butcher Babies.
“Back in February of last year, with COVID and all the other B.S. that was going on, I was glued to the 24-hour news cycle on the TV and my phone, and I started to get really depressed,” Benante recalls. “My girlfriend said I needed to turn off the news and suggested I do something creative, whether it was art or drumming or writing new songs, and she was right.”
“I knew a lot of my musician friends were going through the same thing I had been, so I started asking them if they wanted to get involved, play some songs with me, maybe make a video,” he continues. “That’s how it all started.”
Silver Linings also includes Benante’s previously released Run-DMC medley featuring Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz. It’s available now for digital download.
