Florence Welch can see the green light…on Broadway.
The Florence + the Machine frontwoman will write the music and lyrics for an upcoming musical based on the classic 1925 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. She’s composing the music in collaboration with Oscar- and Grammy-nominated musician Thomas Bartlett.
“This book has haunted me for a large part of my life,” Welch says of The Great Gatsby. “It contains some of my favorite lines in literature.”
“Musicals were my first love, and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism,” she adds. “It is an honor to have been offered the chance to recreate this book in song.”
According to a press release, an announcement regarding a “timeline for a pre-Broadway engagement” is forthcoming.
Florence + the Machine previously recorded the song “Over the Love” for the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The track makes frequent reference to a “green light,” a recurring and important image in the book.
