If you’re tired of 2020, Lzzy Hale is here to guide you through a different year.

The Halestorm frontwoman is the host of the new season of A Year in Music, the AXS TV series that revisits the biggest music headlines in a given year. The show marks Hale’s TV hosting debut, which she tells ABC Audio is part of her goal to keep trying new things amid the unending craziness of 2020.

“During this pandemic, I’ve kind of been saying ‘yes’ to a lot of different adventures,” Hale explains. “[I’m] trying to just kind of expand my own horizons and keep myself inspired, not just musically but in other ways.”

Hale does have some hosting experience, thanks to her Raise Your Horns web series, but with A Year in Music, she was able to really hone in on her hosting persona, which she feels spotlights her “inner child personality.”

“Some of my inspirations were coming from the shows that I used to watch as a kid,” Hale says. “VH1 hosts, the MTV hosts, even a little bit a of Access Hollywood and Extra thrown in there, because I got a cheesy bone in my body.”

Hale likens hosting A Year in Music to getting in a “time machine,” and says she was continually surprised at how much would happen in a single year. For example, the premiere episode profiles 1989, touching on everything from the start of grunge with Nirvana‘s Bleach to the Milli Vanilli lip-sync scandal to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“You don’t actually realize as the year goes by if you’re living in it that all of these things have happened,” Hale says.

A Year in Music premieres this Sunday, October 4, at 9:30 p.m. ET on AXS TV.
