Mastodon‘s Brann Dailor has shared an update on the metal band’s upcoming new album, the follow-up to 2017’s Emperor of Sand.

Speaking to Metal Hammer, the drummer/vocalist proclaims that the fresh material is “all over the map” sonically.

“There’s some big, big heavy riffs that are happening, so that’s what I’m into,” Dailor explains. “And then there’s some guitar gymnastics by Brent Hinds that have been some of the most difficult things I’ve tried to wrap my ahead around and play drums to.”

Dailor adds that the material ranges from “super-progginess” and “super, pretty moments” to “heavy, fast stuff” and “doomy” sounds, as well.

“That’s where we’re at!” Dailor says.

The new record is expected to arrive in 2021.
