Nine Inch Nails‘ Trent Reznor, The Smashing Pumpkins‘ Billy Corgan and Bush‘s Gavin Rossdale will be performing during an upcoming livestream in honor of the late David Bowie‘s birthday.
The online concert, dubbed A Bowie Celebration: Just for One Day!, will air January 8, 2021, which would’ve been the music legend’s 74th birthday. It will also mark the fifth anniversary of Bowie’s passing on January 10, 2016.
Longtime Bowie pianist Mike Garson curated the show’s lineup, which also includes Def Leppard‘s Joe Elliott, Halestorm‘s Lzzy Hale, Bowie band member Gail Ann Dorsey, Jane’s Addiction‘s Perry Farrell, actor Gary Oldman, R&B and soul singer Macy Gray, The Cult‘s Ian Astbury, longtime Rolling Stones collaborator Bernard Fowler, Living Color‘s Corey Glover, Broadway star Lena Hall, and singer-songwriter Judith Hill.
The house band for the night will be made up of entirely Bowie alumni from throughout his career, including frequent producer Tony Visconti and members of Bowie’s final touring band.
“I reached out to friends who had played with David, people who grew up listening to him, those he inspired and influenced,” Garson says. “Artist after artist I spoke with, each immediately understood my vision and enthusiastically said yes to taking part in this special show.”
“That’s the magic of David’s legacy,” he adds. “Like many of the great and timeless songwriters before him — George Gershwin, Cole Porter — David left the world with an amazing and enduring library of music and this is the perfect time to be able to share that music in such a unique and cathartic way.”
